What are some of the most common biohazard scenarios?

Sewage backups and dark water intrusions are more than nasty, smelly deposits – these damages also introduce harmful microorganisms into a structure.

Bloodborne Pathogens such as bodily fluids, tissue and other potentially pathogenic substances resulting from accident, trauma, crime or death.

Illegal drug manufacturing sites, such as meth labs. SERVPRO realizes many of the chemicals used in the production of illegal drugs such as "meth" are volatile and can leave harmful residues throughout a structure. We follow federal and state guidelines to properly clean all surfaces.

Hoarding Risks and COVID

2/11/2021 (Permalink)

pile of trash in living room Fear of contagions lead to hoarding

2020 was a difficult year for many of us, especially with the COVID pandemic.

Many of us who already followed CDC guidance on biohazard sites had to revisit our approach to many job sites, including hoarding.

We had multiple hoarding cleanings last year, but this customer will be remembered by our team due to the most difficult circumstances.

What was originally a mild hoard, according to family members, became a severe level hoard due to COVID.

Both homeowners had preexisting health conditions, and were afraid to leave their home.

Their adult children dropped off supplies, but did not enter the property for fear of contaminating the parents.

And so, the trash piled up. Neither homeowner was truly able to clean the home, but simple piled like items into similar piles.

Once the restrictions were somewhat relaxed and the family could step inside the home, they knew that had to call SERVPRO of Wichita Falls.

Our team of dedicated professionals thoroughly cleaned and disinfected this home, all while maintaining safe health practices.

It was a memorable day to see this family once again enjoy their home, and time with their family.

U.S. Suspends Truck-Driving Limits to Speed Coronavirus Shipments

3/16/2020 (Permalink)

U.S. highway-safety regulators are suspending rules that limit daily driving hours for truck drivers moving emergency supplies such as medical equipment, hand sanitizer and food in response to the nationwide coronavirus outbreak.

This is the first time FMCSA has issued a nation-wide response, and is receiving mixed reviews.

Typically, drivers may not drive after 60 to 70 hours on duty in 7 or eight consecutive days. And drivers cannot start a new round of trips until they take at least 34 hours off duty.

The concern with the overturn of rules is that truckers may be too tired to drive safely, which is why those rules are in place.

Our posts on Facebook regarding this change is pretty much split 50/50. Some of our readers understand the need for a quicker response, while others state the safety factors.

As always in times of disaster, trust the experts at SERVPRO of Wichita Falls to keep you informed, and to respond quickly to all your fire, water, and storm damage.

Hoarding: getting to the bottom of the pile

4/23/2019 (Permalink)

Hoarding cleanup requires thorough cleaning and disinfecting

Approximately 1 in 20 Americans have hoarding tendencies. There are five levels of hoarding, ranging from level one, which looks like a lot of clutter and is generally messy. Level five is the worst, typically having only one path to navigate, appliances and bathrooms aren't usable, and home itself has structural damage.

Some of the risks associated with these homes include water damage, mold growth, structural damage, and of course the increase of potential trips and falls.

Getting to the bottom of a hoarders home is not an easy task. At SERVPRO of Wichita Falls, our technicians are professionally trained in the use of personal protective equipment and cleaning products to ensure their health and safety on these sites.

Hoarding is a very serious condition. And the emotional discomfort a hoarder feels when we remove their property is difficult to witness.

If you need hoarding clean up, call the compassionate professionals at SERVPRO of Wichita Falls.

Bloodborne infectious diseases pose serious health risk.

1/25/2019 (Permalink)

Biohazard contaminates include blood, sewer and flood waters.

Exposures to blood and other body fluids occur across a wide variety of occupations. Health care workers, emergency response and public safety personnel, and other workers can be exposed to blood through needlestick and other sharps injuries, mucous membrane, and skin exposures.

The pathogens of primary concern are the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV). Workers and employers should take advantage of available engineering controls and work practices to prevent exposure to blood and other body fluids.

SERVPRO of Wichita Falls has the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment necessary to safely clean and restore this type of contamination.
