Fire damage is also water damage

There's a lot that has to happen to restore your property. That's why we're here to help
This may come as a surprise to you, but fire damage may not be your biggest concern when a fire strikes your home. In order to put the fire out, your local fire company uses a lot of water. While this sounds like a great idea at the time, all that water can cause damage to areas of your home not affected by the fire directly. This is why it’s important to examine all areas of your home after a fire for damage, even those places where the fire didn’t reach.
Unexpected Water Damage
The amount of water a fire department uses to put out your house fire can easily exceed one thousand gallons. That’s a lot of water for the structure of your house and your belongings to absorb in a short amount of time. In addition, if the fire is hot enough, some of that water gets converted to steam, which can penetrate areas the liquid water may not be able to reach. This is why your home can suffer significant water damage in addition to fire damage when a fire occurs.
Damage From Fire Hoses
Firefighters have one goal when they arrive at your house fire: to put out the fire as quickly as possible. To do this, they use powerful hoses to deliver the water into your home. While a fire hose is an efficient way to deliver a huge amount of water to a confined area in a short period of time, they can also cause damage to your home when dragged through rooms.
Fire damage isn’t the only problem you deal with after a fire. Unfortunately, you may discover that smoke and water damage are also serious problems that need resolving in the fire’s aftermath.
That's why we're here to help.

All fire damage is substantial

Here to help recover and restore your property when damage happens
Not all fire damage is the same.
One property may suffer near total loss due to damage, while another may just be a small amount of sheet rock and insulation.
In this case, the damage was substantial throughout the home.
Upon arriving at the site, our SERVPRO technicians carefully inspected each room, attic area and crawlspace.
What they found was devastation.
An electrical short in the attic jumped lines, traveled down walls, and exited in the crawlspace.
Fortunately, the local fire department had traced all the damaged lines, and prevented a total loss.
However, the damage from the fire, water, smoke and soot was extremely heavy.
Entire ceilings and walls were torn down to remove damaged sheet rock and insulation, leaving a bare wood frame of a home.
Many of the contents could not be restored due to heavy damage, but were cataloged for the homeowner.
In the end, the homeowners were extremely satisfied with our SERVPRO of Wichita Falls team, and we're thankful their family was safe.

Local SERVPRO fire remediation specialist advises grill masters to prepare now for a safe, savory outdoor cooking season
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) warns families that the onset of the summer season also marks a rise in home fires started by outdoor grilling activities. According to the NFPA, on average, 10,600 home fires are started by grills each year. July is the peak month for grill fires, followed by June, May, and August.1
“Sixty-one percent of U.S. households own a gas grill,” says fire remediation specialist Kaycee Ryan of SERVPRO of Wichita Falls. “A total of sixty-four percent own at least one outdoor BBQ, grill, or smoker. The popularity of this outdoor cooking equipment combined with longer, warmer days creates a unique fire hazard that should be taken seriously.”
The NFPA offers these basic tips for fire-safe grilling:2
For gas/propane grills:
- Check the gas tank for leaks before using.
- Open the lid on all gas grills before lighting the grill.
For charcoal grills:
- Use only charcoal starter fluid to start the fire but never add it or any flammable liquids to a fire that is burning.
- Cool coals completely before you dispose of them in a metal container.
For all grills:
- Place grill well away from house and deck railings. Don’t place under eaves or branches.
- Remove grease and fat buildup from grills and trays after each use.
- Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill.
- Never leave the grill unattended when in use.
Whether you are strictly a summer grilling warrior or you use your grill year-round, simple, common-sense actions can help ensure that the only smoke you smell this summer is the sweet aroma of steaks and vegetables grilling.
And if fire damage does happen, call the cleanup and restoration experts at SERVPRO of Wichita Falls.

Fire concerns increase during winter blast
2/28/2021 (Permalink)
Residential fire from a space heater displaces family during arctic blast.
The coldest outbreak in over 30 years smashes records across Texoma during February's #snowmageddon2021.
-Dallas-Fort Worth dropped to minus 2 degrees. That's the coldest temperature there since it hit minus 2 in 1949. It's only 6 degrees shy of the all-time record low of minus 8 degrees set in 1899.
-Oklahoma City recorded its second-coldest temperature on record with a low of minus 14 degrees. Only a minus 17 degree reading in 1899 is colder in the city's weather records.
-Lawton, Oklahoma, set a new all-time record low of minus 12 degrees. Records in the city date back to 1912.
It's not just the freezing temperatures, snow and ice we're concerned about.
It's #firedamage. During severe cold spells, homeowners often use space heaters, fireplaces, generators and propane heaters for warmth.
Unless these are constantly monitored, they could create a fire hazard.
- Do not plug space heaters into power strips
- Make sure your space heater has a “tip over” safety feature
- Do not use propane heaters in enclosed spaces
- Make sure your chimney and flue are clear of obstructions
Take extra precautions to ensure the health and safety of your family during these frigid times.
And if fire damage happens, trust the #1 recommended restoration experts at SERVPRO of Wichita Falls. We're here to help.

Fire, water, smoke and soot damages home

Fire heavily damages home and contents
In the end, the homeowners were extremely satisfied with our SERVPRO of Wichita Falls team, and were thankful their family was safe.

Summer is prime time for grilling and grilling-related fires
6/21/2019 (Permalink)
Grilling Safety Tips provided by the NFPA
When the warmer weather hits, there’s nothing better than the smell of food on the grill.
Seven out of every 10 adults in the U.S. have a grill or smoker*, which translates to a lot of tasty meals. But it also means there’s an increased risk of home fires.
In 2013-2017, fire departments went to an annual average of 10,200 home fires involving grills, hibachis or barbecues per year, including 4,500 structure fires and 5,700 outside or unclassified fires.
These fires caused an annual average of 10 civilian deaths, 160 civilian injuries and $123 million in direct property damage.
According to the NFPA, the top three causes of grilling fires are failure to clean the grill, leaks in gas hose lines or breaks in the grill body itself, and proximity to flammable objects.
SERVPRO of Wichita Falls urges our customers to grill safely, and follow additional tips from the NFPA at www.nfpa.org/grilling .

Wildfires in Altus, Oklahoma created soot and smoke damage to area homes
1/24/2019 (Permalink)
Homes Threatened by Altus Wildfire
When wildfires broke out near Altus, Oklahoma last August, fire wasn't the only concern for homeowners.
Once the fires were contained, many residents in the area called SERVPRO of Wichita Falls complaining about residual soot and smoke smell.
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Wichita Falls will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Dealing With Fire and Water Damage
3/22/2018 (Permalink)
Dealing With Fire Damage and Water Damage
Fire damage isn’t the main problem you deal with after a fire at your North Texas home. Unfortunately, you may discover that smoke and water damage are also serious problems that need resolving in the fire’s aftermath. Fortunately, there exist fire restoration professionals who can help you recover your home and restore it to its former glory.
